KAUST wins HPCWire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards

KAUST was awarded the HPCWire Readers’ Choice for best HPC Response to Societal Plight. The National Center for Meteorology of Saudi Arabia (NCMSA) led a team comprised of scientists from KAUST and other intuitions to develop and implement a weather prediction system that handles both precipitation and dust storms. In one case, the system gave one-day advanced warning with highly detailed accuracy, providing time to prepare and reduce fatalities.

KAUST was also awarded the HPCWire Editors’ Choice for Best Use of HPC in Physical Sciences. A KAUST team has found through simulations that installing solar panels along the Arabian Red Sea coastal area could warm the land, intensify sea breezes, and generate an additional 1.5 gigatons of rainwater annually‚ enough to provide water for up to 5 million people.

KAUST ranked the Middle East’s Most Powerful supercomputer by Top500 Committee

TOP500, the definitive voice of supercomputer statistics, has today confirmed that KAUST operates the Middle East’s most powerful supercomputer, Shaheen III.

Built by the world’s leading supercomputer provider, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Shaheen III is about six times faster than KAUST’s existing Shaheen II system, with its processing power exceeding 500,000 MacBook Pros operating in concert. Based on HPE’s Cray EX design, which also powers three of the world’s Top 10 systems, Shaheen III is architected to support unprecedented performance and scale.

Supercomputing success

The Top 500 List ranks Shaheen II in the top 100 of the world’s fastest supercomputers (June 2022). Ranking is a potent indicator of capability, but it’s not the only factor. What an institution does with its processing power is the real story behind the numbers. KAUST is proud of its achievements. Thanks to Shaheen II, our faculty are able to make breakthrough discoveries and analyses in record time. This information is not only impacting knowledge transfer in academia, it’s also making a powerful difference in the way that our partners in private and government sectors do business.
