Pop-Up Art Exhibition: Lightscapes of the Night

Do not miss this unique pop-up art exhibition of Nelson Ferreira's unconventional 'Lightscapes of the Night' paintings. These convey an unusual visual experience that can only be truly enjoyed in a dark location.  Date: Tuesday, May 28Time: 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.Venue: Community Hub, Discovery Square   Nelson's PlatiGleam series challenges artistic norms by exploring the intersection of tradition and innovation. The series of paintings was created in 2023 in Portugal, at the 14th century UNESCO site of Batalha Monastery, during the artist's residency period on-site. The works present a synthesis of centuries-old classical mastery and cutting-edge vision, culminating in an innovative visual experience. In a departure from conventional methods, Ferreira's PlatiGleam paintings use no paint. Instead, they utilize light refraction and diffraction instead of traditional pigments.  This bold shift rethinks the use of color and form, marking a significant turn in contemporary art. Indeed, the PlatiGleam series heralds a new era in post-contemporary art, as Ferreira defines it. For him, this body of work represents a turning point where classical knowledge reclaims its rightful place at the forefront of artistic discourse. In the age of conceptual abstraction, Ferreira's insistence on classical craftsmanship and technical mastery serves as a beacon of inspiration.  About Nelson Nelson Ferreira is a professional painter specializing in the 15th-century Primitive Flemish methodologies of Painting and 19th-century Academic drawing and painting techniques.  In the United Kingdom, he is a visiting lecturer for the National Portrait Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Chiswick Business Park (Paramount Pictures, Discovery Channel, etc.), amongst others. He also taught drawing and painting at the Islamic University of Malang (AmCor of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang), the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon, the Art Institute of the Autonomous University of Lisbon, Portugal's National Gallery of Ancient Art, etc.  In 2022, he was invited to be the first artist in residence at the sculpture garden of Portugal's National Museum of Contemporary Art, the world's first national museum of contemporary art (since 1911). The Office of the Arts presents an exceptional concert by the iconic Idreesi

Wednesday, May 155:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.Campus Spine (in front of the University Library) Don’t miss out on this stellar, genre-defying concert blending Arabic synth-pop electronic sound and electro-pop! Accompanied by his latest collaborator Ahmed Diaa, Idreesi will perform several of his critically acclaimed songs, drawing on the rich traditions of Arabic poetry and melodies. Additionally, and exclusively for the Office of the Arts, he will unveil an unreleased track from his highly anticipated EP. Prepare to be captivated by a concert experience like no other, Idreesi’s voice is a striking instrument, capable of conveying vulnerability and strength in equal measure, and his performances are known for their raw energy and a dose of theatricality. About Idreesi Idreesi (Mohammad Idreesi) is a captivating singer-songwriter and producer known for his distinctive voice and genre-defying music. Before starting his music career, he graduated from the University of Jordan with a bachelor's degree in Acting and Directing for Theatre. Later, in 2018, he co-founded the electro-acoustic collective Garaseen with Nairuz Ajlouni. With an ambient texture, a house-like groove, and slightly dramatic vocals, their music marked a powerful beginning. Towards the end of  2019 and beginning 2020, Idreesi kicked off his solo project, taking a short break from Garaseen. He released his first-ever Extended Play (EP), Loon El Shams, a 7-track acoustic EP recorded, arranged, produced, and written in his bedroom. He then released his second EP, Bsbanat a 6-track EP, which was his first studio-recorded acoustic EP. The same year, Idreesi became involved in the Arabic hip-hop music scene, producing songs for artist friends like Zaid Khaled and Synaptik. In 2021, he collaborated with iconic names in the indie music scene such as Muhammad Abdullah from El Morabba3, Amjad Sharour and El Wailli. This was a turning point for Idreesi as he was able to expand on the acoustic-guitar-based sound and craft his own electro-pop, Arabic synth-pop electronic sound. In 2024, Idreesi released his newest EP, Msh Bil Kalam, a collaborative EP with Ahmed Diaa. Idreesi remains a unique and compelling figure in contemporary music, constantly evolving and challenging both himself and his audience with his thought-provoking work. Meet the artist: The Office of the Arts hosts an artist talk with Rashed AlShashai

The Pop-Up Boutique and Art Gallery returns to the Spine!

The highly anticipated return of the Office of the Arts’, one and only, Pop-Up Boutique and Art Gallery on the Spine is here! Sunday, December 10 to Friday, December 15, 202312:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Building 5, Level 2, Rooms 2252 and 2286(Campus Spine, adjacent to the Matjar store) As Commencement partner, the Office of the Arts brings to the KAUST graduates, their families, our faculties and the entire community, its signature end of year Pop-Up Boutique and Art Gallery on the Spine. Gifts, camel saddles, bohemian treasures, jewellery, shemagh with a twist, artworks and more. Exquisite items showcasing select local and regional designers and homegrown talents are available at this temporary, curated and multidisciplinary pop-up. Treat yourself or bring perfect, compact, memories of Saudi Arabia with you on your winter gift-giving holidays. For the first time, the Art Gallery introduces installation and conceptual art, showcasing the work of preeminent Saudi artist Rashed Alshashai. Renowned for his distinctive style that employs repurposed found objects to elicit thought-provoking conversations, Alshashai’s oeuvre playfully and irreverently questions socio-political issues, superficiality, modern apathy, suffocating media presence or materialistic belief systems. The Office of the Arts is committed to promoting Saudi talents, shaping strategies to reflect external opportunities and supporting the local economy. All proceeds from the pop-up go directly to our artists, creatives and vendors. Your support contributes to the growth of the Kingdom’s vibrant creative community! Pardon our quirks! As a philanthropic endeavour, the Pop-Up Boutique and Art Gallery on the Spine is cash-only and does not operate a credit card terminal. As they are select artisans’ creations, traditional handmade pieces, which are not mass-produced, quantities for most items are low. Many are, at least partially, handcrafted, therefore slight irregularities are a feature. We trust that you value craftsmanship (and its singularities) as much as we do! About the Office of the Arts Under the umbrella of The Office of the Provost, the Office of the Arts consists of a visual and performing arts team with a mission to promote art, science and culture in KAUST, the Kingdom, and in the wider global context. Our special panel of judges, Selena Franchini, Michael Berumen, Moe Zein and Mascha Dix also had a tough time marking their scores. Moe Zein, a Lebanese recording artist born and raised in Jeddah, gave an exciting performance of two of his songs after serving his role as a judge.  Thanks to Belky and David Ketcheson for being wonderful hosts for the event and to the Red Sea String Ensemble for their beautiful performance.  It was an unforgettable night, and we congratulate all the winners!  Winner – Michael Oyinloye & Giovanni Vorraro – Singer and Guitar First Runner Up – Regina Iakusheva – Solo Aerialist Honorable Mentions – Abdullah Bawazir - Beatboxer and Paolo & Bads - Singing Duet with Guitar Youth Category Winner – Sisyphus (Emils Ekers, Daphne Pisig, Kaitesi Magara, Dylan Todorov & Garreth Moraru) - Band  Photos from the event can be found on the official Community Life Flickr Page.   You can also watch the full recording of the event here. The Office of the Arts presents a workshop on sound spatialisation, in collaboration with Islamic Arts Biennale

Tuesday, May 236:00 p.m.Islamic Arts Biennale Western Hajj Terminal, King Abdulaziz International AirportLocationBook your tickets Expand your sonic palette, sharpen your listening skills, and learn hands-on, sample-based, sound spatialisation. In this multifaceted workshop, Saudi artist Basmah Felemban joins the Office of the Arts’ Sound, Multimedia and New Technologies Specialist, Gabriele Pineider, for a conversation around the visual, auditory and experiential dialogue at play in her enthralling, IAB commissioned artwork, Wave Catcher. Culminating in a participatory segment, the programme highlights both the history and the modern trajectory of visually inspired sound - including developments in acousmatic music and musique concrète led by the French avant-garde. About Basmah Felemban Born in 1993 in Jeddah, Basmah Felemban is a Saudi artist, curator, researcher and creative professional. She received an MFA in Traditional and Islamic Art from The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, where she focused on 12th–14th century Islamic manuscripts, focusing on those that discussed cosmographies, mythical creatures, and cartography. This research gave a historical backing to her own projects, sculptures and installations, which likewise depict traditional Arab and Muslim cosmogonies and illuminate esoteric meanings in literature, poetry, numerism, and Islamic art. Her current practice explores worldbuilding as a method to understand the mysteries in her family history, the role of imagination in rewriting identity, and the ways humans have resorted to bridging gaps in collective memory. Felemban is also a noted curator and researcher of contemporary art movements. In 2011, she founded Saudi Street Art initiative, through which she supports the local Jeddah hip-hop community. She has curated exhibitions, programmes, and live performances of their work, helping to translate it to institutions and wider demographics. About the Islamic Arts Biennale Curated by a world class team of experts across the fields of architecture, archaeology and anthropology, the Islamic Arts Biennale is a first-of-its kind exhibition that conveys a holistic perspective of the Islamic arts as a living tradition that connects past, present, and future. About the Office of the Arts Under the umbrella of The Office of the Provost, the Office of the Arts consists of a visual and performing arts team with a mission to promote art, science and culture in KAUST, the Kingdom, and in the wider global context. The Office of the Arts presents Science & The Great Library of Alexandria by Professor Mariusz Jaremko in collaboration with the Islamic Arts Biennale

Sunday, April 910:00 p.m.Islamic Arts BiennaleWestern Hajj Terminal, King Abdulaziz International AirportLocationBook your tickets What was the original idea for the founding of the Great Library of Alexandria, that institution that made the city of Alexandria a center for learning in the region? Join us on this exciting seminar with Professor Mariusz Jaremko at the Islamic Arts Biennale to learn about the features of the Hellenistic Period that led to the establishment of this purely scientific institution. The complex structure of the Library and its often-dramatic history will be discussed, as well as how much modern science owes to the scholars who worked there for centuries until its final destruction. This will be the story of the creation of knowledge, its partial loss, and its recreation from the ashes. About Mariusz Jaremko A professor of Bioscience, Mariusz Jaremko’s main field of expertise is the biomolecular NMR spectroscopy with a primary focus on the structural and biophysical description of biologically relevant biomolecules and their complexes. Mariusz's interests beyond his professional work cover the comparative studies of human civilizations, economic and military history. He tries to find a common platform for the more profound understanding between people working in science and humanities. Only the entire picture is true, not any of its fragment separately. In collaboration with the Islamic Arts Biennale, the Office of the Arts presents a lecture at the intersection of science and arts by Professor David Keyes

Monday, April 1010:00 p.m.Islamic Arts BiennaleWestern Hajj Terminal, King Abdulaziz International AirportLocationBook your tickets Though specialisation separates them today, science and art spring from the same creative root. Pythagoras, the earliest identifiable mathematician, is also the earliest music theorist. Da Vinci worked out perspective as much to portray his numerous inventions as to paint the Mona Lisa. The father of modern science, Galileo, left us poems as well as new moons. Khayyam, Euler, Lomonosov, Goethe, Davy, Herschel, and Morse are among those revered at least as much for their art as for their science in their day. Verse is presented as a crossroads of analytical and free-associative thought. Verse often begins with a “right-brain” flash but is not delivered without a (usually much longer) passage through a “left-brain” analytical process similar to constrained optimization, in which one attempts to find the best “solution” subject to certain bounds. An Extreme Computing and Applied Mathematician, Professor Keyes claims that this interplay between the two hemispheres is not unique to the arts, but that science, too, is a dual-hemisphere activity and that this helps explain the proclivities of scientists to artistic endeavours and vice versa. Join this fascinating lecture by Professor David Keyes at the Islamic Arts Biennale, exploring the intersection of mathematics and poetry through an expository presentation on right/left brain theories. About David Keyes The child of a librarian mother and inheritor of his grandmother’s piano, David Keyes immersed himself in literature and music at a young age. He studied piano, music theory and composition while participating in orchestra, chorus and musical theatre, wrote short stories, poetry and features for scholastic presses. However, his artistic activities slowed during his engineering studies at college, and halted during the development of his career and family. In 2005, New York composer Mavis Pan encouraged David, then a professor at Columbia, to return to songwriting and commissioned some lyrics from him, and their collaboration led to the recording of various songs featured globally. Besides two albums of jazz originals, they have written many art songs and choral works, and they work (very occasionally!) on a pair of Broadway-style musicals. David Keyes is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science and Director of the Extreme Computing Research Center at KAUST. Writing Verse as Constrained Optimization: A Common Ground of Poetry and Mathematics

Wednesday, February 155:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. (Q&A and reception to follow)Campus Spine (in front of the University Library) The Office of the Arts, in collaboration with the Writing Club, is delighted to present a lecture by Professor David Keyes. Though specialization separates them today, science and art spring from the same creative root. Pythagoras, the earliest identifiable mathematician, is also the earliest music theorist. DaVinci worked out perspective as much to portray his numerous inventions as to paint the Mona Lisa. We claim that this interplay between the two hemispheres is not unique to the arts, but that science, too, is a dual-hemisphere activity, and that this helps explain the proclivities of scientists to artistic endeavors, and vice versa. About the Speaker Child of a librarian mother and inheritor of his grandmother’s piano, David Keyes immersed himself in literature and music as a youth. He studied piano, music theory and composition while participating in orchestra, chorus and musical theatre, and wrote short stories, poetry and features for scholastic presses. However, his artistic activities slowed during engineering studies at college, and halted during development of career and family. In 2005, New York composer Mavis Pan encouraged David, then a professor at Columbia, to return to songwriting and commissioned some lyrics from him. Except for 2008 and 2009 (during the founding of KAUST!) their collaboration has produced several songs per year. Their songs have been featured in programs in the USA, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.  Besides two albums of jazz originals, they have written many art songs and choral works, and they work (very occasionally!) on a pair of Broadway-style musicals. About The Writing Club The Writing Club is a community club in KAUST with the aim of bringing aspiring young writers together to think of ideas and write and help each other grow. Not a writer but an avid reader or an artist? You are heartily welcome to join the club.  We are delighted to announce that submission is open for our literary magazine, titled The Pen القلم .
