KAUST Ph.D. student Raid AlRowais, who is supervised by Professor Kim Choon Ng in the University’s Water Desalination and Reuse Center, recently won the best paper award at the 11th International Meeting on Advances in ThermoFluids (IMAT2019).

IMAT2019 took place from November 7 to 8 at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, and brought together experts from the fields of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion and other areas related to thermal fluids. Over 150 participants from more than 10 countries met to discuss the latest research in thermofluids applications, energy conversion systems, environmental engineering and thermophysical properties.

During the conference, AlRowais presented his Ph.D. research work in the area of direct-contact spray assisted evaporation (DCSE). AlRowais focuses on DCSE with enhancement using a microbubble generator for given high water desalination yields up to 35 percent more compared to conventional DCSE.

In his paper, AlRowais demonstrated low Capex and Opex operational characteristics of the DCSE system, with the unit cost of water at $0.50 per m3.

“I feel more motivated to continue my research after winning the award,” he stated.

AlRowais is also an assistant professor at Al Jouf University in Saudi Arabia and is currently on study leave to complete his KAUST Ph.D.
