Our lab designs and develops light generating, detecting and manipulating devices and systems that can be applied to optical communications, energy, and environmental and agricultural monitoring.
Professor Boon S. Ooi is an Al-Khawarizmi Distinguished Professor of electrical and computer engineering at KAUST. His research focuses on optoelectronic devices and systems for optical communications and sensing applications. He has successfully trained 46 Ph.D. students who have since moved on to top institutions all over the world. He holds 47 issued U.S. patents and is the recipient of the 2024 Sang Soo Lee Award, the 2023 Khalifa International Award, and multiple best paper awards. He has served on the IEEE Fellow Committee, the APS Fellow Selection Committee, and chairs the IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer Committee. He is the editor-in-chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters and an editorial board member of Proceedings of the IEEE. Ooi is also a fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors, the IEEE, the American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, International Society for Optics and Photonics, and the Institute of Physics (U.K.).
