Eighteen KAUST scientists were named among the world's most influential researchers by the Clarivate Institute of Scientific Information.

The Highly Cited Researchers list, compiled annually by the analytics firm Clarivate, identifies scholars whose work has been cited most often in papers published by other researchers in their fields over the past decade. Those chosen for the 2023 list have authored studies in the top 1% of scholarly citations worldwide.

The 18 Highly Cited Researchers at KAUST in 2023 represent an increase from the 15 named in 2022, making it the most named ever for KAUST in a single year. As a percentage of its total faculty, KAUST now has almost 10% of its faculty distinguished by Clarivate, putting the institution at the forefront of the Middle East and Asia and in the company of renowned institutes like Harvard University and MIT, which show similar percentages.

Among the 18 KAUST researchers identified, three – Osman Bakr, Carlos Duarte and Yoshihide Wada – are highly cited in multiple fields.

"The Highly Cited Researchers list celebrates remarkable individual researchers at KAUST who are having a significant impact on the research community globally, as evidenced by the rate at which their work is cited," said Professor Tony Chan, President of KAUST. He went on to say, "It is a great source of pride for KAUST and recognition of the caliber of research being undertaken in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
